Improve your site by adding useful and interesting items which will attract people back again.
These would include guestbooks where visitors can make comments about your site - these comments can also help you to improve your site when they are blunt - and other visitors will come back to see what has been written since their last visit.

There are differing opinions about the benefits of Counters:
One school of thought is that the counter, in it's early days, goes to show that you have a new site which has had very few visitors. Others consider it to be very unprofessional to include a counter. Some think it is useful to regular visitors who like to know that others have visited since thay last did.
If you are adding a new counter to an established site, there are two ways to avoid the new site few visitors appearance: EITHER get a counter where you can set the starting count figure to a much higher figure (as long as it looks natural - NOT like 4000 or similar) OR add text to the counter such as "Counter figure visitors since 18 March 2001".
