16 February 2001 |
The PCF SETI@Home team has been running since August 2000. It originated on the PC Format Forum. It quickly took off and soon, everything was happening. One member registered a domain name, another one built up a site for it, see it at: http://www.pcfseti.co.uk . Everyone also added links to the site from their signatures so that all visitors to the forum could see what was happening. The great breakthrough came when PC Format noticed all this activity and decided to do an article in the magazine in which they described the SETI@Home project, before mentioning the team and the website. The growth of the team was phenomenal and before long, several members joined bringing lots of ready done units with them. In no time at all, we had accomplished over 20 years of CPU processing. As of mid February (under 6 months after the team was created) we reached over 115 years of cpu time.
A dedicated "PCF SETI Team" section was added to the forum and lots of members started chatting about tips, problems and other SETI related news in it. Meantime, the Forums Administrator and PCF Online Editor had also quietly signed up to the team. After a short while, we realised that we were beginning to approach the "Top 200 Club" teams list and decided, to make more of it, to have a race to be the first team to get there with another SETI group. This went on for quite a while with both teams pretty much neck and neck. Finally, after they gained a few new members, we lost the race, but still ploughed into the top 200 anyway and quickly started climbing the list to our current spot at about 120th.
Our next goal is to reach the top 200 teams overall. We should be able to do this by mid 2001 latest. The site is forever expanding and we have a completely new rework of the site on the way. There are member areas with member statistics and milestones at the current site. The team is constantly expanding (600 members to date) and we are still processing just as much as ever. Ultimately, we might make the top 100 overall and then, who knows!
